by Michal Brauhn Damm
Medium Marimba Solo
Instrumentation:
- Marimba (low A)
Dancing Fireflies by Michal Brauhn Damm is a medium-level marimba solo that develops four-mallet technique through a blend of single alternating strokes, double lateral strokes, and recurring rhythmic motives reinforcing consistency and control. The work transforms technical development into a rewarding performance piece while maintaining a clear musical identity throughout.
Players are challenged to move fluidly across the keyboard, developing efficient body movement and maintaining a natural sense of flow through longer phrases. Additionally, the use of “delayed melody,” where important melodic lines emerge gradually from within the surrounding patterns, requires thoughtful phrasing and musical maturity, making the work valuable for both technical and artistic growth.
This solo also appears in Sequential Studies Volume 3 by Julia Gaines-Montag. It ships as a fully bound score.
