Instrumentation: Written entirely for suspended cymbals and gongs, the instrumentation for this piece is flexible. The bold instrumentation is how it’s listed in the score, and it is followed by instrumentation suggestions for the discretion of the director. High Cymbal – the brighter the better (i.e., large splash cymbal, Small crash cymbal), Medium Cymbal – pitched between the high and low cymbal parts (i.e., Medium crash cymbal, Small China cymbal), Low Cymbal – (i.e., Ride cymbal, Large crash cymbal, Suspended cymbal), Tam-tam –Instruments in this group should be lower in pitch than the low cymbal part (i.e., Tam-tam, Large gong, Large, resonant metal (sheet metal, large metal bowl))

Vince by Brian Nozny is a creative and colorful percussion ensemble for four or more players exploring the many sounds and timbres possible with traditional cymbals. It was inspired by Nozny's former neighbor who had a very unique accent in which he clipped off the end of his words. The accent is mimicked throughout the work by using various muffling techniques across the ensemble. Players also explore a variety of sustained and muted techniques, multiple playing zones of the cymbal, and multiple implements to manipulate the sound of the instrument. The piece requires players to be honed in to ensemble groove and pulse for their part to fit into the greater musical picture. Vince is an excellent work to expose students to the infinite possibilities available with cymbals.
