Petrichor by Kyle H. Peters is an intermediate solo for marimba (5 octaves) that perfectly showcases the sonic beauty of the instrument while utilizing some of the most foundational 4-mallet techniques required to play it. Equally tender and contemplative, it evokes pastoral imagery and the rich sensory experiences that can immediately follow the first rain after a long period of dry, hot weather.

The melody is commonly defined by way of double vertical strokes and is generally limited to intervals of thirds, with occasional appearances by closely neighboring fourths and fifths. While relatively straightforward in its technical demands, this piece offers a great piece to practice musical sensitivity

Though they share the same title, this piece is unrelated to Kenyon Williams’ multipercussion/timpani solo.
