Always

by Kyle H. Peters

Medium-Advanced Marimba Solo

Instrumentation:

• Marimba — 5-octave (optional low A)

Always by Kyle Peters is a medium-advanced solo that explores the marimba’s lyrical and expressive possibilities through warm resonance, flowing melodic lines, and sensitive interplay between melody and accompaniment. Inspired by the sustain of a piano pedal, the music asks the performer to create a sense of continuity while carefully balancing the melodic voice against the surrounding texture.

Cross-sticking provides one of the solo’s primary technical challenges, requiring smooth transitions that preserve the continuity of the musical line. Together with the changing meter and flexible tempi, these demands give developing four-mallet players an opportunity to strengthen coordination and control while creating a performance that remains intimate and expressive.
